Only when the ePub formatted e books are published following the international guidelines, they are compatible with most of the advanced mobile devices and handheld devices like PDAs. Platform independency is an important thing that end users expect as they can just drop and drag the files between any two mobile devices.
International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), U.S.A, has postulated guidelines for standard ePub formatted ebooks. As of now, most of the devices like Sony Reader, Apple phone could take up DRM free and DRM enabled files. Amazon Kindle can read the old version of Mob pocket (.mobi) version files also. Some of the e-readers are capable of reading PDF formats also.PDF is not the standard format for ePubs.
Epub format contains three things, open publication structure (OPS), open packaging Meta data file (OPM) format and open container format. It may be interesting to note that OPF has been taken from the DAISY format laid down by the DAISY consortium. These formats are meant for the publishing of DTBooks digital talking books. Digital Talking books are useful for the children with visual impairment and learning difficulties. They will read slowly only so that these special education teaching aids are really helpful.
DTBooks have the capability to adopt multiple audio files formats. When publishing ePub formatted ebooks in multiple languages, CSS 3 font face rule is useful. Meta data embedding helps one to identify the bugs and parse through the book easily when an ebook is created. ePub books are created in XHTML format that is one of the standard formats of XML. Apple even suggests that ePub publishers can take up open source tools to develop API applications to create ePub formatted ebooks. Navigation Center eXtended format (NCX) files serves as index for ePubs and OPFs suggest the arrangement of pages in the ebook format. Ebooks can take up four types of images JPEG,GIF, SVG, and PNG.
