Hair Loss & Heart Disease?

11/6/2013 4:30:00 PM by Suisse Natural Hair Salon

Hair loss may be more than just embarrassing for some men, it may also be a signal of heart disease. Researchers have suspected a connection between hair loss and heart disease. Doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, have found that men who lose hair on the crown of their head (not those who have a receding hairline and are losing hair at the front of the head) have a higher risk of heart disease. In fact, men who are losing hair from the crown, have high blood pressure and high cholesterol are three times more likely to have heart disease than men who also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but have a full head of hair. Hair loss or “balding” is a very common condition that is usually inherited. It affects 30-40% of adult men. If you believe hats can cause hair loss, or that standing on your head will cure balding, check out the top 10 hair loss awareness posts. This study can’t reveal what causes the link between baldness and risk of coronary heart disease, it can only tell us that the two are linked. Men concerned by these headlines should not lose sleep, or any more hair over it. Read more at: http://suissenaturalhairsalon.com/hair-loss-and-heart-disease.html

Hair Loss Awareness 101 - Hair Loss Fact or Fiction?

9/4/2013 2:15:00 PM by Suisse Natural Hair Salon

Hair Loss Awareness 101 - Hair Loss Fact or Fiction? In recognition of National Hair Loss Awareness Month, Suisse Natural Hair Salon is taking a moment to focus on the top ten truths and misconceptions regarding thinning hair, hair loss, and hair replacement. Take the quiz to see how well informed you are. 1. True or False? Wearing a hat causes thinning hair. False: Simply wearing a hat does not cause hair loss. 2. True or False? Exposure to chlorine in swimming pools causes hair loss.? False: While prolonged saturation in chlorinated water can cause your hair to become dry and brittle, or even green if your hair has been bleached, it does not cause thinning hair. 3. True or False? Applying sunscreen to the scalp causes hair loss. False: Applying sunscreen to the scalp will not cause hair loss. If you have a buzzed hair cut, shaved head, or if you’re going bald, applying sunscreen to your head to prevent sunburn is an important part of health safety. The sun’s UV rays are dangerous to unprotected skin. Skin cancer (melanoma) is the most common type of cancer in the United States. 4. True or False? Swimming in the ocean causes hair loss. False: Saltwater does not cause hair loss. Like chlorine, prolonged saltwater saturation can cause your hair to become dry and brittle. It is recommended to saturate your hair with clean fresh water before diving into a pool or the ocean to keep your hair from absorbing the chlorine and salt. 5. True or False? Overexposure to sun and heat causes hair loss. False: While severe sunburn on your scalp could potentially harm your hair follicles, the sun’s UV rays are not usually known to cause hair loss. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause hair to dry out and lose pigment so it is advised to deep condition your hair when planning extended beach trips. The over use of hair dryers set to high temperatures can cause hair to become brittle and also cause breakage, but again it not a known cause of hair loss. 6. True or False? Prolonged wearing of tight ponytails, pigtails, and cornrows can cause hair loss. True: This type of hair loss is known as Traction alopecia. It is a form of gradual hair loss caused by pulling force applied to the hair. This commonly results from the sufferer frequently wearing their hair in particularly tight ponytails, pigtails, or braids. It is also seen occasionally with people who use barrettes to hold their hair back. 7. True or False? Stress causes hair loss. True: You often hear people say that stress is giving them grey hair, consider them the lucky ones. For many men and women too much stress can cause major damage to health, mood, productivity, relationships, and quality of life. Some of the physiological stressors commonly linked to hair loss include rapid weight loss/gain, caloric deficiency, and, in women, hormone fluctuations following childbirth or switching/stopping oral contraceptives. Even though physiological change is the underlying cause of stress-related hair loss, added emotional stress can exacerbate the effects, leading to a more pronounced bout of shedding. As we age, the growing cycle slows like most other body processes, so periods of stress during middle age and later in life can make it that much harder for the hair to fully recover. 8. True or False? Coloring or bleaching your hair causes hair loss. True: There is a connection between hair dye and hair loss, however, such hair loss is not permanent. If you are experiencing hair loss after you have color treated your hair it is most likely due to damage to the hair shaft. Chemicals used to bleach or dye hair may cause the shaft to break off. The root portion typically grows back after the scalp heals from the chemical irritation that creates itching and redness. Your hair will be somewhat weaker and you may see extra hair in your brush or in the shower drain. To minimize the chance of such damage, use dye within three shades of your natural hair color. 9. True or False: Perm chemicals cause hair loss. False: Chemicals in perm solutions will change the structure of your hair, but only if over processed (left on to long), will it cause the hair to break. If you notice hair loss after having a perm, most likely it was due to the rollers being wound too tight. 10. True or False: All hair replacement systems are glued to the scalp. False: While there are plenty of hair replacement companies that will gladly adhere a poorly made synthetic toupee to your head, it is NOT the only option when it comes to non-surgical hair replacement. Hair replacement technology has come a long way since the “hair club” days. Natural hair integration is a technique that allows men and women to add real human hair to areas where thinning has progressed. Hair integration can be performed without harmful adhesives while allowing the scalp to breath.
