Quick and Easy Care Tips For Industrial Blades

11/9/2022 9:34:00 AM by Carolina Knife And Manufacturing, Inc.

Industrial blades are much different from the knives you would find in your kitchen drawer. Industrial blades are generally used to cut or shred an incredible variety of materials. From food and plastics to the toughest steels and non-ferrous materials, industrial knives and cutting edges are used to reduce the size and process of all kinds of materials.  However, one thing that industrial knives have in common with the knives you typically would find in the kitchen is that they will last longer if they are properly cared for.

Quick and Easy Care Tips For Industrial Blades

If you are like most people, you may not know where to start when it comes to proper care for industrial blades, let alone regular blades in general. Luckily, in this blog, we are going to share three quick tips to provide your industrial knives with better care.

1. Properly Store the Industrial Knife

When you are not using your knives, it is important to keep them packed in a box or package that allows the industrial knife blade or the cutting edge to remain protected. Falling, bumping, or hitting the blade can damage it. It is best to keep the blade in a container that will keep the knife from moving around. You’ll also want to ensure that the container will not nick the cutting edge in anyway.

2. Cover the Cutting Edge

It is important that an industrial knife’s cutting edge is protected at all times. There are some easy ways to ensure the cutting edge of your industrial knife remains protected: some people choose to dip the edge in melted plastic. Others prefer to put a wooden or rubber scabbard around the outside of the edge. Covering the cutting edge with protective material will ensure that nothing can nick the blade of your industrial knife when it isn’t being used.

3. Prevent Rusting

Most industrial knives are made of steel, making them susceptible to rusting. To avoid this, it is wise to put a rust preventative on the knife. Rust preventative typically needs to be applied once, and most industrial knife manufacturers will apply it to their products before sending them out. If the knives are stored in a moist or damp area, it may be best to apply an additional coat of rust preventive down the road.

By following these quick and simple tips, you can better care for your industrial knives. Keep an eye out for future posts, as we will be sure to cover more helpful care and maintenance tips. Remember, if your knives are taken care of they will generally last longer.

By using a hot knife to cut through rubber, foam, fabric, glass, or other materials, your team can more efficiently utilize operation time, instead of spending hours on cutting projects for materials that are otherwise difficult to cut down. When it comes to applications, the Zetz-24 Hot Knife can help you with slicing and cutting products including plastic pipes, flooring tiles, flashing, foamed plastics, corrugated sheet, cable conduit, and so much more.

Zetz-24 vs. Other Brands

Zetz-24 Hot Knife Thermocutters are not the only option for thermal cutting solutions, so why do we suggest them? Simply because they’re a top-quality brand that’s designed to optimize your operation. The Zetz-24 Hot Knife Thermocutter is designed for continuous use in a heavy-duty setting, so you don’t have to worry about it overheating, malfunctioning, or shorting out after hours of use. Instead, your team can efficiently cut through materials up to five inches thick throughout the workday. Because it is small enough to be transported, it can be used in on-off batch production, placed at a central workstation, or can be taken to cut materials on-site, as well. We even offer optional robotic handle attachments for the Zetz-25 Thermocutter.

Staying Safe While Using Industrial Cutting Blades

7/20/2022 9:38:00 AM by Carolina Knife And Manufacturing, Inc.

Blade Safety is a Priority

While powerful industrial blades are incredibly useful in manufacturing processes, they are also non discriminatory in regards to what they cut. Because of the nature of these blades, it is important that safety measures are put in place, and all protocols followed, to ensure that all of your workers reach the end their shifts with all of their digits and limbs intact.

Carolina Knife & Manufacturing, Inc., has compiled this list of safety tips that should help you and your employees be aware of the inherent dangers that come along with working with industrial blades. Proper awareness and training will go a long way towards keeping individuals free from injury, or in some cases, even death. Make safety a priority with these helpful tips!

Preventing Cuts, Lacerations & Punctures

  • You should only ever use the correct tool for the job at hand. Never use an industrial blade for a purpose or function that it was not designed for. When you use any equipment for a reason it was never intended to be used, you risk the tool reacting in an unexpected way, potentially causing injury.
  • Make sure that all employees that will be using your industrial cutting blade are fully trained in its use. Many needless injuries occur simply because someone was not properly trained in its use.
  • Regularly inspect your industrial blades. Blades that become dull or damaged require much more mechanical force to be effective. A blade failure could cause damage to a piece of equipment, or worse, the operator of that equipment.
  • When it is possible, make sure that you’re working in an environment with proper visibility. Some work environments prevent this, but every measure should be taken to have as much visibility as possible.
  • If you have any possibility of accidentally coming into contact with an industrial cutting blade, you should always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as cut resistant gloves, as well as safety glasses to protect your eyes in case of blade failure.
  • When the blade you are using is hand-operated, you should always cut away from yourself, and make sure that no part of your body is in the cutting path. Also be aware of the potential path a blade may take if it slips, and try to stay out of its path.
  • Blades should always be stored properly when not in use. You should have a storage system in place to accommodate all of the blades that are ever removed. Unorganized clutter is a quick road to disaster and accidental injury.
  • Although many blades are very strong, you should never need to use excessive force when using an industrial cutting blade by hand. Blades are strong, but they’re not indestructible. Excessive force could cause a break, or cause you to drop the blade. If you ever drop an industrial blade, never try to catch it. It may be instinct to try to do so, but do your best to avoid this almost sure-fire way to injure yourself.
  • It should go without saying, but never engage in any unprofessional horseplay around industrial cutting blades. One slip is all it takes to go from having a fun time to trying to navigate a serious situation.
  • If a blade is ever removed from the mechanism it belongs to, you should never leave it in a place where it is not visible. For example, never place objects on top of a blade where someone may accidentally pick it up, not knowing it was there. Blades should always be in the location where they are being used, or safely stored.
  • Unless you are a circus performer, you should never, ever throw blades. If another worker needs the blade you are using, set the blade down, and let them pick it up.

Additional Tips for Cutting Blades in Powered Machines

There are some additional safety measures that you and your employees should take when an industrial cutting blade is being used in a powered piece of machinery. These include:

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when operating or cleaning machines that use sharp blades.
  • If a piece of equipment is broken or malfunctioning, you should have proper lock out/tag out procedures in place. Stop all power to the machine, tag it, prevent it from being used, and make sure the proper supervisors are notified of the malfunction.
  • Make sure that you always know where your hands are in relation to the cutting blade. Keep your hands away from all moving parts of mechanical equipment, regardless of the presence of a blade.
  • If a blade ever seems to be jammed, you should never try to dislodge items with power still going to the machine. Even with the power off, built up kinetic energy can be released when the obstruction is removed, so use extreme caution when clearing jams.
  • Ensure that the work area around industrial cutting machines is clean and clear from objects you may stumble or trip over. Use best practices and common sense for workplace cleanliness.
  • If your mental capacities are ever impaired by illness or medications, you should never attempt to operate machinery with sharp cutting blades. Slow reaction times and a lack of attention to the task at hand is a dangerous combination.
