How do I know if my contractor has insurance?
The best way is to require the contractor to pull a permit. The State of Wisconsin monitors all licensed contractors to be sure they are up to date on work comp and liability insurances.
When is a permit needed?
Most remodeling projects require a permit before starting work. We pull permits on all projects other than simple replacements. If there is any structural change then a permit is required and a very good idea.
Do I need a tub?
This question comes up frequently when working with clients in the 50's and above. They may have only one bathroom with a tub shower but find it cumbersome and dangerous to climb over the tub ledge to shower. My answer . . .Do what works for you. Someone buying your home years from now can always convert it back to a tub if they want.
Can I get a larger shower?
Yes. Using our unique capacity to make custom solid surface shower bases allows making use of every inch of space available. Even 2''-3'' of width can provide a much roomier shower. Removing a built-in linen closet or expanding into an adjacent room or closet can provide room to rearrange the bath and get the shower you will love.
What is the best flooring?
LVT or LVP luxury vinyl flooring is now the most popular flooring for high-traffic areas. A big advantage is the ability to be installed over many existing floors. LVT can be installed with grout lines to look like ceramic tile installations. Luxury vinyl flooring is extremely durable and much easier to walk on than tile floors.
Can a wall be removed?
Probably. We need to assess the structural needs and also rerouting of any plumbing, ductwork, and wiring. The building codes provide charts for header sizes for most applications. Other times we will need to involve an engineer to specify the size and type of beam needed. We have built beams spanning over 20' without intermediate support.
What is the best material for kitchen tops?
Today quartz is the most popular counter material followed by solid surfacing (Corian). Quartz is a harder stone-like material that will resist scratching better than solid surface tops, but solid surface tops can be repaired much easier than quartz. Both materials allow undermounted sinks but solid surface sinks can be integrally fabricated onto the top leaving no joint. Granite tops have faded in popularity and laminate tops are rarely used in remodel projects. A new material that is sheet porcelain provides a very hard, scratch-resistant top that also will withstand high heat. Disadvantages include cost and limited edge treatments.
How Long will my remodel project take?
This depends on the type and scope of the project as well as the lead times on some products like countertops and shower doors that usually cannot be premade. Product availability and lead times are usually confined to the time between ordering and the start of your project. However, we have been continuing to have quality issues with plumbing products especially. This causes a delay when the plumber realizes parts are missing or the item is damaged. We maintain multiple vendors for most products and scramble to find the parts or products with as little delay as possible. Projects like countertop replacement will usually take only 2-3 days. Shower replacement is about 5-7 working days, normal hall bath about 3 weeks, master bath 3-5 weeks, and kitchens between 2 to 7 weeks.
