Breast implant reconstruction is a surgery performed after mastectomy. After the cancerous tissue is removed, Dr. Tandon will reconstruct your new breast to maintain the shape and size of your original breast. There are two types of breast implant reconstructions: immediate, or direct-to-implant, and delayed surgery. We will determine which option is best for you during your consultation, and fully walk you through the process for each one.
Patients who have a DIEP procedure can enjoy results that last for years without requiring additional treatments. Unlike breast implants, there is no need for additional surgeries and no risk of implant rupture.
Health insurance companies are required to provide coverage whether you choose to have natural reconstruction or reconstruction with implants. If you have any questions regarding the process, we're more than happy to help.
The healing period will vary from patient to patient and will depend on many different factors, including the technique used and your body's natural rate of healing. Patients who receive implants typically stay at the hospital overnight, while those who undergo natural reconstruction usually remain at the hospital for three nights. Most women can expect to return to their daily routine four to six weeks after surgery.
Natural-tissue reconstruction is the closest option to a natural breast. Since they are created from your own tissue, they are warm and soft and move similarly to natural breasts. Implants are made of silicone or saline and cannot compare to tissue.
Reconstructive procedures can be done at the same time as the mastectomy, soon after the mastectomy, or well after the surgery is performed. The timing of your breast reconstruction will depend on your health and preferences.
