Frequently Asked Questions about Krauss Dermatology

Krauss Dermatology is closed on Sunday and Saturday.
Krauss Dermatology is open Mon-Fri 7:00 AM-5:00 PM.
miraDry is the only non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that safely removes underarm sweat and odor glands indefinitely. miraDry’s technology delivers energy directly to the sweat and odor glands in the underarm. It gets rid of the glands while cooling the overlying skin. Because hair follicles are in close proximity to the sweat glands, some hair follicles in the underarm area are also removed during the procedure.
You are a good candidate for miraDry procedures if you suffer from excessive sweating or odor in the armpits, or want to decrease your need for antiperspirants and deodorants.
A typical miraDry treatment takes about an hour to perform. Initially, the area will be numbed with diluted lidocaine by our board-certified dermatologists, then the miraDry procedure with contact cooling will be performed painlessly in the underarm area by a member of our well trained medical team.
You can expect an immediate and lasting reduction in sweating. Once removed, sweat glands do not come back or regrow. An average of over 80% sweat reduction is achieved in one treatment. Results vary from person to person. Most patients achieve their goals in 1 treatment. About 25-35% of patients elect to have a 2nd treatment to improve their results.
Unfortunately miraDry is not covered by any insurance plan. However, if you have a healthcare savings account (HSA, FSA) you may be able to pay for your treatment from that pre-tax account. Ask your company’s healthcare savings account administrator to make sure.
Most patients take a day after the procedure to ice the area, relax and recuperate. Moderate exercise is typically resumed within several days. Patients generally use non-steroidal pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) for a few days. Swelling of the underarm, arm or chest, numbness, bruising, sensitivity, and nodularity in the treated area are common for several days post-treatment.
Patch testing identifies substances that cause persistent skin rashes. People often develop allergies to ingredients in skin care products, cosmetics, or topical medications. Chemicals and dyes in clothing, rubber and leather components in shoes and gym equipment, jewelry and metals can also be responsible for skin reactions. When these substances contact the skin, they may result in a rash known as contact dermatitis. This allergic reaction can manifest itself in many ways: itch and redness, swollen eyelids, dry hands, and many others. Once the culprit substance (allergen) is identified, the rash significantly improves with avoidance of that substance. Patch testing is performed by our expert board certified dermatologist Dr. Pamela Norden. Patch tests are distinct from skin prick tests, which are used to diagnose hay fever and other internal allergic reactions. Skin prick tests have limited value for patients with skin rashes.
Patch testing involves a series of appointments, each lasting approximately 30 minutes. Three appointments will be scheduled during the span of one week on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Monday: A member of our health care team will place adhesive strips on your back and upper arms. Tiny quantities of up to 150 allergens in individual square aluminum chambers will be applied and secured with adhesive tape. You may reinforce loose patches with tape at home if necessary. Wednesday: You will return for removal of the adhesive strips and an examination for reactions such as redness, inflammation, and swelling at the site of patch application. Thursday: The patch test sites will be examined again. Dr. Norden will discuss the significance of both positive and negative results and you will be given information about the substances that cause the skin reaction. You will also receive a printout from the American Contact Dermatitis Society Contact Allergen Replacement Database (CARD) outlining products you can safely use. If a new, positive reaction (a localized rash or itchy spot on the back or arms where tested) is noted within a week or two after patch testing, you should notify the office. Please note that some reactions may stay positive for weeks.
It is important that you not be taking oral corticosteroids, such as prednisone, or other oral immunosuppressants within one week of patch testing. You should not be patch tested within one month of a cortisone (prednisone) injection. It is crucial that you avoid applying steroid/cortisone creams to your back or upper arms within one week prior to patch testing. All topical products, including Vaseline, lotions, creams, and ointments, should be avoided 24 hours before patches are applied. Please shower the morning of your first appointment as you will not be allowed to take a bath or shower during the 4 days of testing. You may continue to take over the counter or prescription antihistamines such as Benadryl and Claritin.
It is important you bring any items from home or work that you suspect may be causing your dermatitis. This includes cosmetics, lotions, creams, medications, plants or articles of clothing. Please wear loose fitting clothing that is easy to take off and on, such as a button down shirt. Tape strips will be marked with a purple or black marker. This marker may stain clothing, so please dress accordingly.
It is important to avoid strenuous exercise that may loosen the patches or cause sweating during the patch testing week. Sun exposure to the testing area should be avoided for 4 weeks prior to your appointments. No showering is allowed during the patch testing. Sponge baths are permitted in areas not taped (the lower body, underarms, etc.) Patch testing should not be performed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the use of a medication activated by light. PDT for treating precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses) utilizes a topical (on the skin) solution or gel in conjunction with a blue light. This treatment acts by selectively destroying precancerous cells, as well as shrinking sebaceous glands damaged by the sun.
The skin is swabbed to remove oils. Levulan Kerastick® or Ameluz (both aminolevulinic acid) is then applied to the skin and left on for 60 minutes. The patient then rests in a reclining position with goggles on while a blue light shines on the skin for 16 minutes. A titanium/zinc sunscreen is then applied.
A slight stinging, tingling or warm sensation may be noticeable during treatment with the blue light or IPL. We use a cold air blower called a Zimmer cooler to make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. Numbing cream is not helpful when using the blue light.
edness, swelling, increased warmth and tingling sensations may occur for 1 to 3 days after treatment. Redness and scaling may be present for up to 1 week depending on the degree of sun damage. Rarely, crusting, darkening or lightening of areas of the skin, intense redness and prolonged swelling or stinging may occur. These generally resolve with proper skin care. Sun avoidance is absolutely necessary for 48 hours after the procedure. A sunscreen containing titanium and zinc oxide must be worn daily. Patients must wear a hat to protect the face from sunlight while outside during this 48 hour period as well.
PDT has been FDA approved for the treatment of precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses or AKs). The original FDA approval involved an overnight application of the Levulan medication, with light treatment the following day. Side effects and discomfort were much more unpleasant with this method. For this reason, PDT is more commonly being performed with 1-3 hour application time of Levulan. Many insurance companies require that a patient try prescription topical creams for their actinic keratoses before trying PDT.
Current recommendations suggest 1 to 2 treatments are necessary to achieve results. In addition, precancerous lesions and sometimes very superficial skin cancers that are not yet visible on the skin can be cleared. Improvement likely lasts years with continued use of sunscreens, topical prescription medications for AKs and anti-aging creams such as retinoids (Retinol, Retin-A, Renova).
Botox® is an FDA-approved anti-aging injection that uses the neuromodulator botulinum toxin type A to block nerve endings from activating muscles. When these nerve endings are blocked, the muscles underneath the injection site relax causing the skin to appear smoother. As a result, wrinkles and fine lines temporarily fade away, leaving behind a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
Do you have stubborn wrinkles and lines around your forehead and eyes? Do you want a smoother, more rested appearance – one that makes you look more refreshed and youthful? Do you want to prevent fine lines between your brows or in your crows feet areas from becoming deeper and long lasting? If you find yourself answering yes to these questions, then it’s time to discover Botox® injections at Krauss Dermatology.
The average Botox® treatment takes about 15 minutes to perform by our board-certified dermatologists, making it an excellent “lunchtime” procedure. Our physicians use a gentle technique and small ice packs to keep you comfortable during the procedure.
We do more Botox and Juvederm filler procedures than 98% of cosmetic practices in the nation. We have treated thousands of satisfied patients safely and comfortably. We not only treat the common areas of the frown lines between the brows (the glabella), the forehead and crows feet, but more complex areas such as the lips, chin, jawline and vertical neck bands. We offer a touch-up at 2 weeks to ensure symmetry and excellent, natural looking results. Botox and other neuromodulators are temporary but not reversible, so it’s important to be treated by highly experienced dermatologists.
Do you feel like your complexion is dull and tired-looking, despite using skin creams and serums? Do you want improvement in pigmentation and texture with no downtime? Do you want to keep skin looking bright and luminous over time and forestall the telltale signs of age and sun damage? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to discover the Clear + Brilliant Laser at Krauss Dermatology.
Our practice was one of the first in the Northeast to offer the CoolSculpting® procedure over a decade ago. Now we are the first in New England to treat patients with the Coolsculpting Elite® system. We have performed over 7,000 treatments. Unlike many offices and medispas, your CoolSculpting® Elite procedure will be performed by our board-certified dermatologists. We have treated thousands of patients with the highest level of safety and success.
CoolSculpting® Elite procedures are entirely non-invasive making them quick, easy, and virtually painless. The contouring treatment is done in-office and uses patented fat-freezing technology to effectively remove unwanted fat cells from the body. The CoolSculpting® Elite applicator is applied to the treatment area to selectively target isolated pockets of fat while leaving surrounding tissue unharmed. Fat cells are crystallized (frozen) and begin to die. Eventually, your body naturally begins to metabolize the treated fat cells. Unlike similar treatments that solely reduce the size of fat cells, CoolSculpting® Elite helps completely flush damaged cells from the body leaving you with a more contoured physique.
CoolSculpting® Elite is ideal for the patient who: exercises watches what they eat wants a noninvasive procedure wants their clothes to fit better wants to look better in bathing suits has stubborn fat in the abdomen, hips, back, thighs, arms, or double chin CoolSculpting® Elite is safe and effective for all skin types, textures, and tones. If you’re an otherwise healthy adult with isolated fat pockets, you’re most likely a good fit for the procedure. At the time of your in-person consultation, our expert providers at Krauss Dermatology will assess your candidacy for the procedure and customize a treatment plan to help you effectively meet your goals. You can also count on us to be completely honest if you are NOT a good candidate and would never steer you wrong.
CoolSculpting® Elite is safe and effective for reducing fat cells throughout the body. The nine FDA-clearedtreatment areas include: Abdomen & Flanks Inner/Outer Thighs Buttocks (Banana Roll) Upper Arms Back & Bra Fat Submental Fullness (Under-chin)
Dermaplaning and micropeel is a combination treatment consisting of a manual exfoliation process, immediately followed by a mild medical grade peel, for maximum penetration. This procedure is performed by our nurse aesthetician. Dermaplaning is an exfoliating treatment that uses a hand-held instrument to remove dead skin cells and vellus hair or “peach fuzz”. Light, feathery strokes are used to gently scrape the skin’s surface. The build-up of dead skin cells and microscopic hairs can cause your complexion to appear dull, flaky, and can even cause breakouts due to clogged pores and hair follicles. This form of mechanical exfoliation produces an even, healthy glow. Products applied after dermaplaning are also more easily absorbed. Subsequent make-up application is also smoother.
Dermaplaning is a safe and painless form of exfoliation. It is not recommended for those with severe or inflamed acne, sun or wind burnt skin, or hirsutism. Eye area, nose, and any raised moles or blemishes are avoided. This is not a technique for trimming eyebrows. Mild redness can occur after this treatment and usually subsides within a few hours. Most experience an even, healthy glow. Nicknamed the “lunch-time peel” or “red carpet” peel, there is no significant downtime. This peel is safe to be performed every 2-4 weeks.
To understand candidacy for laser hair removal, we must first discuss the Fitzpatrick scale. The Fitzpatrick scale is a classification system used in order to differentiate between the varieties of human skin color. The Fitzpatick scale can be outlined as follows: Type 1 – always burns, unable to tan, palest complexion Type 2 – typically burns, minimal ability to tan Type 3 – will sometimes burn, able to get an even tan Type 4 – minimal burning, always tans well, moderate brown skin tone Type 5 – rarely burns, tans very easily Type 6 – never burns, always tans, dark brown skin tone Skin types 1-3 are the best candidates for this laser hair removal treatment. Patients with light skin and dark hair get the best results, and treated skin must not be tanned. During your Laser Hair Removal consultation, we may ask questions pertaining to your ethnicity and reference your skin tone/color. Sometimes, areas of the body may be hard to assess and learning more about your ethnicity helps us to determine whether we can safely treat you with the technology we use in our practice, and the proper settings to use to avoid side effects. There are some ethnicities that are more prone to hyperpigmentation, some that usually require more treatments than average, and even some that may have increased hair at the border of treatment and all of these varying factors will discussed during consultation. We will only proceed with treatments if determined we can do so safely and effectively for your unique skin type and hair color.
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular procedures performed in the United States for a good reason. It is effective, safe, and convenient for both women and men. Shaving, plucking, and waxing can cause discomfort, rashes and take a tremendous amount of time and money. Laser hair removal can remove the need for these temporary methods of hair removal forever.
Lasers offer an indefinite solution to unwanted hair in the: Bikini Underarm Lip and chin Back and shoulders and other areas. Our certified dermatology nurse, Yvonne Alameddine, RN, performs laser hair removal safely and effectively at Krauss Dermatology.
We make the procedure as comfortable as possible by using prescription strength numbing creams, ice packs, a variety of techniques using needle and cannula, and fillers that contain anesthetic in them.

The fillers we love and use around the lip and mouth area include: Juvederm Volbella Juvederm Ultra XC Restylane Silk Restylane Refyne We also recommend medical grade skin care products including Skinmedica HA5 Smooth and Plump System, Restorsea Pro Lip Magic and other facial products that will also improve the skin around the lips. In addition, Intense Pulsed Light Photorejuvenation, Fraxel and the Clear and Brilliant Laser can improve skin color, texture and tone around the lip area.
Ultherapy is an FDA-cleared non-invasive treatment for lifting and tightening the skin of the jawline, under the chin, and neck, and can also improve lines, wrinkles and skin laxity on the décolletage. Ultherapy works by penetrating the dermis with time-proven, safe ultrasound energy causing the skin to contract and tighten over time. As a result, skin looks firmer, younger, and much less saggy!
You’re a good candidate for Ultherapy treatments if you have mild or moderate skin laxity issues on your face and chest, and you are looking for a non-surgical solution. Patients with severe laxity are not good candidates. It is important for patients to realize that results will not be as extreme as a surgical facelift.
The VBeam Pulsed Dye Laser is the most effective instrument for removing spider veins (small dilated vessels) from the face, and cherry angiomas (small red spots on the face and body). These lesions often clear with only one or two treatments. The VBeam can also help fade, over the course of multiple treatments, red or raised scars, port wine stain birthmarks, and red discoloration and flushing of the face from rosacea.
The Pulsed Dye Laser is the most effective instrument for candidates who want to remove spider veins (small dilated vessels) from the face, and/or cherry angiomas (small red spots on the face and body). It works best on patients with lighter skin types and those who are not on blood thinners at the time of treatment.
The Vbeam Prima laser is the most advanced model of the gold standard in vascular lasers. The manufacturer of the Vbeam, Candela Corporation, asked our practice to evaluate the prototype of the Vbeam Prima and help them improve the computer software interface. We have been using the Vbeam technology since 2005 to achieve great improvement in a variety of vascular conditions such as broken capillaries, chronic sun damage, rosacea, acne redness and scarring, and surgical scars.

Kybella is a specialized injectable procedure designed to remove fat under the chin and jowls. Instead of using surgical techniques like liposuction, our board-certified dermatologists can expertly inject the treatment solution into the fat with precision, and melt it away over time. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is naturally present in the human body and plays an important role in breaking down fats. When used in Kybella, this acid works to safely break down the membranes and contents of fat cells. As these cells are removed, the body’s natural processes expells them from the treatment area indefinitely.
The best candidates for Kybella treatments are those individuals who have excess fat underneath the chin and/or around the jawline without excess skin laxity. Kybella is not appropriate for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for patients with scarring disorders, or infection in the area.
Dysport is an FDA-approved neuromodulator injection that temporarily blocks nerve endings from activating muscles at the injection site. When these nerve signals are blocked, the muscles underneath the injection site become relaxed, causing the skin to soften and smooth out. Relaxing frown lines and crow’s feet result in a younger appearance. Dysport is very similar to Botox but is made by a different manufacturer.
You’re a good candidate for Dysport injections if you have wrinkles and fine lines on your forehead, between your eyebrows or around your eyes (crow’s feet).
