Frequently Asked Questions about H. Daniel Atwood, MD
What are the conditions for revisional breast surgery?
The most common indication for revisional breast surgery is dissatisfaction with the initial results. For example, women may choose this procedure if: - The breasts are asymmetrical in shape or size. - The breasts are smaller or larger than originally desired. - The nipples are asymmetrical. - The breast implants do not look or feel natural. Women who are considering revisional breast surgery should be in good general health and free of any medical condition that would make surgery a risk.
What should be expected after breast implant removal?
Following breast implant removal, it is normal to feel tired and sore for a few days. Pain and discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription medications. You will be provided with a comprehensive list of post-surgical guidelines. It is important to follow these instructions closely to ensure a successful and comfortable recovery. You should minimize activity and rest as much as possible for the first few days. Generally, light activities can be resumed after about one week. Though each patient is unique, most women will feel back to normal after about two weeks. Typically, patients will need to wait about three weeks before participating in cardio or workout routines
What are the most common removal reasons for breast implant removal?
There are several reasons why women may wish to undergo breast implant removal, these include but are not limited to: - Sagging Breasts - Unsatisfactory Size - Breast Implant Rupture - Surgical Complications, for example - if you experience capsular contracture, implant shifting, or breast dysmorphia, then breast implant removal will likely be recommended
What are the types of tummy tucks?
In order to provide fully customized results, there are different types of abdominoplasty: - Traditional, an incision from hip to hip and around the navel. - Mini or Partial, to address moderate concerns in the lower abdomen - Extended, in addition to removing fat from the abdominal area, an extended tummy tuck involves the removal of excess fat deposits from the flanks, or love handles
What is considered when evaluating a candidate for a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure. Rather, it is a way to address lax skin and fat deposits that will not respond to diet or exercise. Many patients elect to undergo a tummy tuck following massive weight loss or pregnancy. As with any cosmetic surgery, candidates should be in good overall health.
How can fat grafting be used for breast augmentation?
In addition to breast implants, some doctors can further augment the breasts with a patient's own fatty tissue extracted during a liposuction procedure. This option can provide additional refinements that many patients find provide results with an even more natural look and feel. If you wish to eliminate excess fatty tissue and enhance the size and shape of your breasts, this option may be recommended.
What are the different types of breast implants?
One of the first decisions patients should make when choosing their implants is whether they want silicone or saline. Saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution after they are inserted into the breast. Silicone implants are pre-filled, and therefore require a larger incision. However, many patients believe these implants feel more like natural breast tissue. There are also gummy bear implants, which are a type of silicone implant that is form-stable. In other words, like its candy namesake, it is pliable yet cohesive. These implants are ergonomically shaped, making them a popular choice among those who wish to undergo breast reconstruction and have minimal breast tissue.
What is the recovery timeline for a facelift?
Recovery time will always vary person to person and body to body. You may have a follow up the day following your procedures to assess the health of the sutures, then another follow up 5 days later to remove suture. There are typically scheduled evaluations to assess healing milestones.
What should be considered before deciding it's time for a mommy makeover?
We recommend that you wait at least three months after childbirth before undergoing surgery. Breastfeeding mothers should wait at least six weeks after they are finished breastfeeding to undergo a surgical procedure. In addition, mothers who are planning on having more children should consider postponing their mommy makeover indefinitely, as a pregnancy will most likely reverse the results and require additional surgery.
What are the commonly combined procedures that make up a Mommy Makeover?
Based on your goals, a mommy makeover can include: - Tummy Tuck - Liposuction - Breast Lift - Breast Augmentation
How do you start the process of a Mommy Makeover?
For your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Atwood, it is recommended that you bring in a photo of what you looked like prior to pregnancy. Based on your consultation, Dr. Atwood can recommend the procedures you should undergo as part of your makeover.
Can a breast lift be combined with breast augmentation?
Dr. Atwood can combine a breast lift with breast augmentation if you wish to achieve both elevation and an increase in breast size. For optimal results and safety, Dr. Atwood recommends that patients who want both procedures undergo a breast lift first. Implants can be placed three to six months later.
What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast augmentation procedure?
While augmentation addresses the size and shape of your breasts, a breast lift is designed to address sagging that occurs due to aging, weight loss, breastfeeding, and other factors by removing some tissue and reshaping the breasts.
Do you have to quit smoking for breast augmentation?
We recommend that you quit smoking for six weeks prior to your surgery. In order to maintain the best results, you should ideally break the habit for good. One of our compassionate team members will spend as much time as you need to address your questions and concerns.
