We utilize flash cards to help our students associate the names of the lines and spaces with the actual notes on the piano or keyboard. We also use flash cards as an educational tool to acquaint our students with the musical signs and interpretive markings as well as the kinds of notes and rests and their equivalent time values. Right in the beginning we start with small pieces not only to satisfy the students desire to make music but also to begin the development of learning to sight read. We use various levels of theory notebooks to instruct about sharps and flats, the kinds of notes and rests as well as other musically pertinent information. For piano and keyboard students, we use duets involving two students playing with four hands. Not only are these duets such as Diabelli, etc., very beautiful, but they teach students the great importance of playing rhythmically and in time. For development of manual dexterity, we utilize as standard disciplines such as Czerny, Isidore Philippe, Hanon and various other techniques. Our teachers, many with masters and doctoral degrees from schools of music at major universities perform for our students.
