Frequently Asked Questions about R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center
Is R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center open on Sunday or Saturday?
R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center is closed on Sunday and Saturday.
R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center is open Mon-Fri 7:00 AM-5:00 PM.
What should I do first if I’m interested in enrolling my loved one?
Call and arrange for a tour of the center. Then, complete an application for enrollment. Schedule a second, shorter tour and bring your loved one for a brief assessment within our setting. If you feel good about moving ahead, complete the enrollment process with our director or assistant director. We’ll help you arrange a start date and reserve days.
Are meals included in the daily fee?
Yes, absolutely! Lunch and an afternoon snack are included in the fee. We prepare a nice, large hot meal every day on-site complete with hot, fresh baked rolls and delicious desserts. Lunch is served in a lovely dining room with linen napkins and fresh flowers on the table from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Lunch is provided for drop-in care as well with a minimum of four hours.
Can I volunteer at R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center for community service?
Students often volunteer at R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center to earn community service hours for work, honor society, or other service-related organizations. We also have seniors and community members volunteer to lead certain groups. If you have a special skill such as playing an instrument, artistic ability, or passion for a particular activity, please call the center. We would love to speak with you!
Do you offer half-days or drop-in services?
The center is open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and the rate is $90 per day for members. There is not a half-day option for scheduled days. Before and after care is available from 7:00 AM until 9:00 AM and from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM for an extra fee. Members can always call for drop-in care if they need help outside of their normal schedule. There is no minimum amount of time for drop-in. However, there is a four-hour minimum number of hours for lunch to be included in the rates. If you want drop-in care for fewer than four hours but would like to have lunch, there is a $10 fee for lunch (you will see it on your weekly invoice). We will do our best to accommodate your need for drop-in care, but it is not guaranteed that we will have space. The only way to have guaranteed care is for it to be scheduled.
Does a person have to have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia to enroll as a member of R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center?
Our Alzheimer’s and dementia program is designed specifically for those with memory problems, but members are not required to have an actual diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other dementias. Members with Parkinson’s, mild cognitive impairment, and other older adults do benefit from our programs since they focus on both cognitive and physical wellness. The state of Missouri requires that we have a locked-down space as an Alzheimer’s and dementia unit. We have a room separate from the main group space for those who can be overstimulated or who need quiet time. Your loved one can spend the majority of their day in this space or only when needed.
Does the center provide transportation?
Transportation is not provided by the center at this time but can often be arranged by private senior transportation services, or we can help set up transportation through OATs. Our sister company, Caring Companions In-Home Senior Care, also has caregivers who could come to your home and help your loved one get ready for their day, drive them to the center, drive them home, and continue care at home if needed.
What if my family member gets tired or needs to rest?
The center has a bedroom in addition to a large number of recliner chairs to accommodate members wanting to rest or nap.
Is there any place to isolate someone if they get sick?
If a member becomes ill or has a medical emergency, they are cared for in the center’s bedroom to ensure full privacy. A staff member will remain with them until the family or paramedics arrive.
What about meals and snacks if there’s a special diet or food allergy?
R.I.S.E. Senior Day Center prepares meals on-site, making it easy to accommodate special diets, food restrictions, and individual food preferences. All lunch menus, including our snack menu, are reviewed by a licensed dietitian to ensure members receive the diet as ordered by their physicians.
Is there a plan for emergencies?
In addition to the center’s written policies regarding a medical emergency for a member, there are extensive written policies and procedures for emergency preparedness and responses to various potential internal and external emergencies. The center’s plan addresses situations such as fire, failure of heating or cooling, power outage, explosion, tornado, flood, extreme ice or snow, wildfire, and hazardous materials accidents. In addition, fire and disaster drills are conducted monthly.
What if my loved one doesn’t want to come to the center?
We understand that your loved one could be reluctant the first few times as aging, isolation, and even memory loss tend to cause fear and uncertainty with any new situation. Frequently, the ones who were the most adamant in the beginning are the same ones who want to come every day once they adjust. Our staff works closely with families to find creative solutions for persuading a loved one to attend the center on a regular basis. The more often they attend in the first few weeks, the quicker they adjust and feel comfortable.
What are the qualifications of the staff?
Each staff member is carefully selected and screened, and a criminal background check is completed before employment. Our staff members are specifically trained in best practices of dementia care, including skills and techniques for behavior acceptance, reassurance, enabling, and using cues and prompts to appropriately assist our members. All staff members are certified in CPR and first aid and receive at least 12 hours of extensive ongoing training throughout the year.
Does insurance cover the cost of day services?
Almost all long-term care insurance policies will cover the cost. A staff member can assist a family in verifying benefits with their long-term care insurance provider.
What if my family member doesn’t want to participate in activities?
We understand that planned activities are not for everyone. Some members are more interested in helping with activities or other jobs where they can feel needed. Throughout the center, books, games, and puzzles are readily available in addition to having someone to talk to nearby.
I am a veteran. Will the VA cover my costs?
We have partnered with VetAssist. If you are eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit through the VA, you would be offered 69 to 100 hours at the center per month at no cost. If you would like to split the hours with home care, Caring Companions In-Home Senior Care would also be able to send a caregiver to your home to help with household chores, transportation, meal prep, laundry, and more. A staff member can assist a family in contacting VetAssist to find out if you are eligible for this benefit.
How often does my family member have to attend?
It is suggested that when a member first starts or when someone wants to fully benefit from the program that they attend at least two to three days a week. These members seem to make a much easier transition, become comfortable with having a familiar routine, and become more fully engaged. However, some members may attend less frequently.
