The National Pastime Of The Past

National Pastime

If you were a child of the 1950s, then your favorite national pastime would heavy been Major league Baseball. During those years, baseball was everywhere. It dominated the radio and the television. The entire coverage and number one emphasis seemed to be concentrated on baseball. During those days, you could see people busy discussing baseball in their spare time.

You could possible drive down any street while hearing continuous coverage of this sport. The famous commentator then was Vin Scully whose voice people of the 1950s have still not forgotten. There was a time when the Angels used to be the favorite of the people. All what people had in mind were players like Dean Chance and Bo Belinsky. The life of people centered on baseball. This was especially true for the boys. They could be found everywhere playing the game. If they were not playing the game, you could see them collecting baseball cards or trading them with other boys. The dream of kids those days used to be playing for major leagues.

However, with time, a massive shift seems to have taken place. The shift is evident, but not unexpected in our sports priorities. In fact, the truth is that no matter how America is faring, or how the economy is moving, one brand remains unaffected. It seems to grow and grow with each passing year, showing no signs of recession at all. It is called NFL.

This sport is the king in America these days. Take the year 2010, eighteen of the twenty highest rated telecasts focused on NFL games. The next year, 2011, NFL was there in 9 of the 10 top spots. People are no longer seen discussing baseball with the same enthusiasm. The names you hear these days are those of Tom Brady, Eli Manning and Aaron Rodgers.

Things seem to take an extreme extent during the Super Bowl. Companies are seen paying a huge sum of money for ad spots during this event. It turns out to be the most watched program of the year. This has been the case for many years. The price soars to an amazing high on Sundays. It is 3.5 million dollar for just half a minute airtime.

The value of NFL players runs very high. Players are known for earning millions and millions by playing for their teams. Performing well on the big day could transform you into an instant star. The cycle never seems to end. Old players get replaced with new players. Rookies are there all the time making an impact. The value of NFL teams never seems to fade. Back in 2002, Houston Texas paid 700 million dollars to join the league.
