On Tuesday, March 27th, teens from around the county will be learning the tips and tricks that every cheer or pom hopeful should know, before trying out for a competitive team, at the Making The Squad! free seminar at Designs On You in Wildwood.
"I originally got the idea for this seminar while talking to one of my customers" says Salinas, owner of Designs On You Embroidery, Screenprinting, Spiritwear & Gifts, 33277 N. Highway 45 downtown Wildwood. "Our store specializes in cheerleading, and she was telling me how a lady once gave her daughter some advice on what would give her a leg up on the competition," Salinas recalls, "and with over fifteen years experience in the cheer industry, my mind immediately went to how this information would help aspiring high school cheerleaders and how could I get this information out." The idea of a free seminar at the store was a natural fit.
"Last year was our first seminar and the girls that attended had great successes" said Salinas, "80% of the girls made the squad they were trying out for!" With a laugh she went on to explain, "We're not taking all the credit, but I'd like to think we had something to do with giving them some useful information, and helpful tools and strategies to better present their skills."
From the feedback given last year, it was reinforced that a seminar of this kind was needed and Designs On You decided to make it an annual event. Kayla Yarbrough, of Wildwood, said of the seminar, "...it really helped to take away my nerves...". Kayla is one of the girls who made the squad.
Kelly Wiederin, lifelong cheerleader and former WTHS varsity co-captain, will be conducting the information packed seminar again this year. "I lived this stuff my whole life," says Wiederin with a smile. "It's all stuff that you pick up after the first few tryouts, but I really wish someone would have had a class like this when I was coming up."
Topics such as appearance, attitude, and skills will be covered and what the coach and their helpers will be looking for. "After seeing her presentation last year I learned a few things," chuckled Salinas. "I'm excited for the girls to be getting this information, because I really think it will make the difference for some of them between making the squad and not."
