TRAVEL TRENDS: Fourth of July 2012 Report
Posted on:Monday, July 30, 2012

Earlier this week CheapOair, a leading online travel agency, presented insightful findings about trends from the recently passed holiday, the Fourth of July. Using pricing and cross-year compared data, the travel agency pinpointed the top 10 international and top 10 national destinations for that week. This year, Orlando, Florida topped the charts nationally and Cancun, Mexico topped internationally.

Market Watch highlighted that despite the rise in airfare – an average increase of 4.2% national and 9.8% increase international –traveling was not hindered this Independence Day. With the holiday falling mid-week, travelers were more inclined to take off additional time before or after the holiday, and showed interest in travelling greater distances because of it.

Florida made quite a chart topper this year, with three cities in the top 10 national destinations – Orlando as #1, Ft. Lauderdale as #6, and Miami as #9. Despite tropical storm Debby and the high heat and humidity of Florida list summer, the holiday vacation appeal was still there.

When it came to international, Cancun held the #1 spot both this and last year, despite a 14% increase in airfare! Contrary to that, however, more than half the destinations this year in the international top 10 are NEW to the list.

This past Fourth of July holiday showed great trends for the travel and tourism industry, both within the United States and abroad.
