BREASTFEEDING

2/6/2017 10:17:00 AM by Thrive for Life Chiropractic

Breastfeeding during the first year of life is regarded as the optimal form of nutrition for infants. Current research shows that breast milk is best for babies and even has numerous health benefits for the mother. During the first few days of life, your baby will get colostrum, which is rich in nutrients and antibodies to help protect your baby. As the baby nears the first week of life, the production of colostrum changes to mature milk. Mature milk contains the right amount of sugar, fat, protein and water to help your baby nurture and grow. Breast milk is easier for most babies to digest and it helps boost your babies’ immune system to keep her healthy. Most new mothers are aware that breastfeeding has great benefits for their newborn. A mother can also benefit from breastfeeding a child, as it helps to reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and the development of post-partum depression. What they aren’t aware of is how chiropractic care can help this process. Difficulties with breastfeeding can be from a number of different issues with the mother or the infant. Pain, latching problems, poor milk supply, one-sided nursing and weak suckling, are a few of these difficulties. The CDC reported that only 77% of infants were breastfed immediately following birth and by 6 months this number dropped to 49%. Chiropractic care can help increase these numbers. Chiropractic care for both a new mother and an infant is gentle, painless, quick, safe and effective. Often time’s relief can be experienced after the first visit but it can take time and patience for the problems to be completely resolved and keep them from returning. Common Indicators for Breastfeeding Difficulties Latching difficulties Babies who are unable to turn their heads in both directions Babies with difficulty opening their mouths Biting down Clicking noise while feeding Weak suckling reflex Fussy babies Poor milk production What a Chiropractor Can Do When experiencing difficulty with breastfeeding it is important to figure out what the cause is. This can take time and it is important to keep in mind that it can be more than one issue creating the problem. A chiropractic evaluation can help to give the right idea of what could be going on for either the mother or the baby. Because the suckling reflux and milk production are controlled heavily by the nervous system, an interference of the nerves can cause dysfunction. Adjusting the spine and cranial sutures can help release the interference and improve function. Muscles are also controlled by the nerves so if the problem is a muscular problem an adjustment to the affected area will help release the tension and allow the muscle to do its job. Another aspect that we can look at is the nutrition of the mother. When the mother is not getting the proper nutrients for herself she cannot produce the nutrients the baby needs. The mother’s nutrition can also affect how much milk she produces and how the milk tastes to the baby. Getting adjusted can help with breastfeeding difficulties and can help both the mother and baby function at their best! Pathways Magazine: Nicole Piazza Lederman, an ICPA-certified chiropractor practicing in Waterloo, Ontario, and former associate professor at Parker University’s College of Chiropractic, explains it this way: “Chiropractic helps for several reasons. First, in the newborn or preemie, the baby may have a weak suck reflex due to interference in the nervous system, especially at the level of the upper cervical spine. This can be caused by immaturity in the nervous system, in the case of the preemie, or by subluxation of the joints in the upper cervical spine due to birth trauma. Even in “good” hospital births, the head and neck are usually “managed” as the baby exits the birth canal and when the shoulders are delivered. This often results in some pulling and stretching of the tissues and joints in the neck. This type of birth trauma can cause a sprain/strain injury to the joints of the neck in addition to a subluxation complex. Breastfeeding problems can also be caused by different cranial faults or slight misalignments in the cranial bones. This can again be due to the management of the head as the baby exits the birth canal. This can also be caused by the position of the baby in utero as well as prolonged or protracted labors, especially where vacuum or forceps have been used. In my experience, these babies will go to the breast and feed for a minute or two, but are fussy and come off the breast as they cannot get a good latch. Most often I find that these babies have misalignment in the temporal mandibular joint, a fault at the frontal parietal articulation, as well as having an inferior palate on the same side as the TMJ subluxation. Once correcting this complex, you can test the sucking reflex by placing a finger in the baby’s mouth; you’ll find that the sucking reflex is better coordinated and much stronger. Moms are so relieved and grateful to be able to breastfeed their babies.” See more at: http://pathwaystofamilywellness.org/Chiropractic/nurture-the-nervous-system-nourish-the-baby.html#sthash.qxIQix9g.dpuf How We Can Help Specifically finding and adjusting misalignments Extremity adjusting (foot, ankle, knee, hip) Muscle work FMT-fascial movement taping Stretches/exercises Home care recommendations Personal training Massage Therapy Supplementation We use state-of-the-art scanning technology to measure nervous system function and progress throughout a patients care. SCIATICA

Sciatica can be a slight numbness or tingling of the legs or feet to a sharp, shooting pain. Sciatica can be very painful and persistent. It often gets worse over time and if not taken care of, sciatica can become a chronic and debilitating condition. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It is made up of smaller nerves originating from the spinal cord in the low back region, these nerves join together and travel under the muscles of the buttocks and carries on down the legs. Even though you may be suffering from leg or calf pain, chances are the nerve is being compressed or irritated along its path and the pain is not derived from the leg. If left untreated, surrounding nerves and tissues can become affected. Doctors have found that the pain experienced with sciatica can be a result of a misalignment of the vertebrae of the low back, a spasm of the piriformis muscle, a pelvic misalignment, and/or a combination of the above. NECK PAIN

Neck pain is the 2nd most common condition in which people seek out chiropractic care. Millions of people experience neck pain and related upper back/arm pain at some stage in their lives. In today’s culture we spend hours driving, sitting, hunching over a computer or other sedentary activities. These activities along with many others can adversely affect the neck. Neck pain can be caused from a trauma such as a sports injury, a fall, or an auto accident. It can also be from prolonged wear and tear that results in abnormalities in the muscles, ligaments, and nerves that are caused by misalignments in the spine. These misalignments in the spine can also be the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders, and arms. Pain that radiates or travels down the arm and into the hand or fingers can be a sign/ symptom of a pinched nerve or entrapment in the neck. Common Causes of Neck Pain Pinched Nerves Misalignments in the Spine Postural Imbalances Arthritis Pinched Nerves Misalignments in the Spine Degeneration Spinal Stenosis Whiplash In most cases, neck pain can be resolved and mobility restored quickly with the proper treatment. Given the importance of the neck to overall mobility and function throughout the body, it is important to understand the root of pain and treat it correctly. HEADACHES

2/6/2017 10:17:00 AM by Thrive for Life Chiropractic

Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches. These can vary in severity, type of pain, location of pain and frequency. More common headaches include tension, migraine and cluster headaches and are treatable with chiropractic care. Tension Headaches result from muscular tension in the muscles that attach to the head, neck and shoulders. The tension can result in spinal compensation leading to misalignments. The misaligned vertebra then put pressure on the spinal nerves leading to pain, irritation, and decreased signals from the spinal cord to the organs, glands and muscles. Migraine Headaches are descried as intense, throbbing pain and usually found only on one side of the head. They can be aggravated by various different triggers; such as chocolate, drinks, stress, food, odors, hormones, medications and more. Migraines often show signs before the headache takes over, this can include nausea, vomiting, and light and sound sensitivity. Studies have shown that migraine headaches are related to blood flow. Adjusting the cervical spine (neck) will help to decrease the pressure on the vessels and nerves allowing for better blood flow, increased oxygen to the brain and decreased muscle tension and pressure points. Cluster Headaches are known for a shorter duration but more intense pain. They are often on only one side of the head. It typically occurs at night and they tend to occur 1-4 times per day for several days and then will not occur again for months or years. They, like migraines, are associated with the dilation of blood vessels to the brain and result in increased pressure. Therefore, chiropractic treatment that allows for improved blood flow and increased oxygen can help to relieve the symptoms experienced. Sinus Headaches occur when there is inflammation of the sinus cavities in the skull, typically associated with a sinus infection. There can occasionally be a fever present as well. They can be described as a build up of pressure and tenderness over the sinuses. When you receive chiropractic adjustments, it helps to stimulate draining of the sinuses and reduces nerve interference so the body can fight the infection naturally. We also have recommendations on natural supplements that can be taken to help reduce the occurrence of sinus infections. Thrive For Life can help give you a safe and effective alternative to medications for headache management. BACK PAIN

2/6/2017 10:17:00 AM by Thrive for Life Chiropractic

At some point in life, approximately 80% of adults experience low back pain. The type of low back pain and how people describe their low back pain varies from person to person. The low back is referred to as the lumbar spine. This region of the spine is made up of 5 vertebrae that are separated by intervertebral discs. Discs act as shock absorbers to cushion the bone and help distribute weight. Vertebra of the neck, mid back and low back make up the spinal column, which protects the spinal cord. Between the vertebrae there are holes, called foramen that allow for nerves to exit and travel to all parts of the body including muscles and organs. These nerves transmit signals back and forth from the brain to the body, the body to the brain. If you have a misalignment/restriction of the vertebrae in the lumbar spine these nerve signals can be interrupted leading to dysfunction and or back pain symptoms. Low back pain can be caused by many different entities. It is typically mechanical in nature (misalignment). Other causes can be: Sports Weight lifting/training Menstrual cycle Pregnancy and delivery Work ergonomics Repetitive use Sedentary lifestyle Injuries and accidents Degenerative changes Bulging disc Arthritis Surgery Kidney Stones Plantar fasciitis Knee pain IBS How We Can Help Specifically finding and adjusting misalignments Extremity adjusting (foot, ankle, knee, hip) Muscle work FMT-fascial movement taping Stretches/exercises Home care recommendations Personal training Supplementation Massage Therapy We use state-of-the-art scanning technology to measure nervous system function and progress throughout a patients care.
