Today's BMW transmissions are wearing out faster than ever.  Due to poor maintenance recommendations by BMW these otherwise great transmissions are failing really too soon.  Anytime there are moving parts and friction material there is debris generated. No matter the fantastic lubricating properties of the late model BMW transmission fluid, wear still occurs and when wear occurs there is material shed or drop. This "drop" ends up in the fluid in suspension and then migrates through out the transmission collecting in places where it is not only unwanted but unwelcome. the place where it becomes especially problematic is in the valve body.  This very fine metal and friction material gets logged  also the solenoids in the valve body causing all kinds of shift related grief to the point where the line pressure actually can be excessive thereby breaking drums.  The solenoids in the transmission create a electro-magnetic draw inside their canisters and trap this unwanted material inside, as this collects it begins to impede the performance of the solenoid, eventually restriction its range of motion or arresting it all together.  How do we prevent this debris from collecting inside our expensive BMW transmissions.  Well service them before BMW recommends,   anything done to eliminate or dilute the debris in suspension will also decrease the likelihood of intrusion into the solenoids and into the valve body.  Unlike BMW we recommend that you service your very pricy transmission every 30,000 miles at the least and always  change the filter with a good quality filter.   Interestingly as BMW recommends or doesn't recommend the service is because they claim that the fluid is lifetime well lifetime fluid is very expensive, it helps to better understand what is the definition of lifetime. Lifetime is defined by what the anticipated original owner will keep the BMW. Hence it becomes the problem of the second owner to make the mechanical repairs that become very expensive. BMW transmission repairs can easily range from $2200-$6500. the 6 speed and 8 speed transmissions are getting over the top expensive.  Now you can take this very sound advise or not its your transmission after all.  Service the transmission or get it repaired. AAMCO in Bear Creek specializes in BMW transmissions offering our 10 year unlimited mile warranty.  WHY WOULD YOU GO ANYWHERE ELSE?
