Looking to replace your old, beaten sofa? In a Scottsdale eclectic furniture store, you will find a wide array of sofas to choose from. Though you probably already expected that there would be dozens of designs to choose from, you might not have realized that there would be a lot of other factors to consider before finally settling down onto your new sofa.

Going into stores without any knowledge about sofas and its various types will get you nowhere. The trick is to sort through the sofa types. Of all those styles of sofas, there are actually just three basic options of sofa cushions that you need to know and choose from. It is the combination of these types of features and materials that makes every piece of furniture unique.
All Foam
One of the three cushion choices is foam. An all-foam cushion is made up of a high-density foam core that is covered by egg-crate foam and polyester fiber wrap. If you fancy a firm sofa, and are not a fan of wrinkles, this type of cushion would be the ideal option.

The back cushion of an all-foam sofa is typically softer that the seat cushions to prevent anyone from pitching forward when sitting. What’s good about this sofa type is that it requires less maintenance. It does not need to fluffed, primped, or plumped as it will look the same even after you've sat on it.

Spring Down

Another cushion option is called spring down. From the name itself, this type is constructed of a core of coiled springs. These springs are surrounded by a foam box which is enveloped in a thick layer of polyester fiber, and then fitted into a downproof cover. While the springs provide resilience, the down makes the cushion soft.
Unlike all-foam sofa cushions, spring downs require frequent fluffing and rotating to retain its appearance. However, it is softer as compared to all-foam. So if you do not mind the occasional plumping and fluffing, as well as enjoy the softness of down, spring down cushion would be the right choice for you.

Down Plush

Down plush, or blendown, is the softest type of sofa cushion. In addition, it is the most luxurious as it is made of a thinner foam in the middle which is covered in a thick layer of polyester fiber. This is then wrapped in a thicker layer of poly-fiber blend and down. Such construction make a down plush seem and feel like a pillow.

Similar to spring down cushions, this type requires fluffing in order to maintain its proper dimension and loft. If you don’t want your sofa to look sloppy, you should fluff the cushions every time you get up from it. Though they are comfortable, down plush cushions are not for those who can’t be bothered with periodic fluffing and plumping.

Keep in mind that these are just the basic types of sofa cushions. Some manufacturers produce other options and even develop hybrids. In the end, it would still come down to your preference and comfort.
