Sweet Basil has set a new standard for Thai food in the Pacific Northwest. Since its beginnings in October of 2000 on Broadway Street and 32nd Avenue, Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine has been a sensation among Thai food enthusiasts and skeptics alike. Supree (Boos) Smithynuntha is the owner and a self-taught chef of Sweet Basil. He grew up in Bangkok, Thailand and learned to cook Thai food from his family and the recipes they shared with him since he was very young. He stayed in Thailand for 23 years and has been living in the United States after graduating from St. Louis, Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1993. Supree's parents are part Chinese which has influenced the exotic combination of flavors in the food at Sweet Basil. With the help of Tony and Kay Chulacharit, as well as his wife Amy Rasamee, Supree has managed to run two extremely successful locations. The first opened up on Broadway Street in 2000 and has received recognition from CitySearch being voted in the Top Ten Thai Restaurants. It was also mentioned by the Oregonian in 2001 to be an Outdoor Dining Rising Star. The second location in NW Portland opened on Glisan Street in March of 2008 and enjoys a more upscale ambiance than the first. Both restaurants have proven to be exceptional in their service, atmosphere, and presentation. Sweet Basil's authentic, home-style Thai cooking embodies a wide array of dishes cooked by Thai chefs. Because of the extraordinary care put into the recipes, the presentation and flavor of the courses are unsurpassed. Sweet Basil is known for its house sauces, especially the peanut sauce found in the House Curry and served alongside the famous Fresh Wrapped appetizer. Black and white Jasmine rice is served in the shape of a moon and star with the curries, stir fries, and house specials. Both restaurants house a full bar but Sweet Basil on Broadway has its own special "Basil Bar" in the basement with one of its busiest hours being "Basil Time" where drinks and appetizers are at discounted prices.
