You may be wondering if counseling is the right path to take for you and your partner. It's great that you are taking steps to be proactive about your concerns. If you have answered YES to three or more of the above questions, your relationship is under much stress and marriage counseling may be a good idea to consider. All relationships go through ups and downs but sometimes relationship issues become overwhelming. Asking for help is taking a step towards building a stronger foundation, honoring your relationship and feeling closer to each other.
If you answered YES to the last three questions, couples therapy is not recommended. In fact, it can actually cause more distress to the relationship. I do recommend individual therapy first and once abuse or addiction is no longer part of your relationship dynamic, then you can begin to focus on couples therapy. In the case of an ongoing affair, the affair has to be completely over for couples therapy to be even possible.
