10. Natural History Museum in Balboa Park

This world class museum was founded in 1874 and is the oldest scientific institution in Southern California. The museum has displayed the Dead Sea Scrolls, a reconstructed Allosaurus dinosaur, and a working flying replica of Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis. The museum has an interesting history in itself. It was acquired by the United States Navy during World War II and transformed into an infectious disease hospital. As a bonus, street performers make strolling around Balboa Park a delight.

9. Mission Beach Roller Coaster and Boardwalk

Located between Pacific Beach and Belmont Park, the boardwalk is a great place for people watching, roller skating, arcade gaming, boogie boarding, hot dog eating, clubbing, or fishing off the jetty. The famous Giant Dipper (also known as the Mission Beach Roller Coaster) opened in 1925, survived a fire in 1955, and later became a National Historic Monument in the 1990s. It is operational and ready to ride!

8. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

The park contains high plateaus, majestic cliffs, foxes, rabbits, cacti, coastal chaparral, and rare Torrey pines. Black's Beach, San Diego's unofficial nude beach, is a great place to watch the sun set and the moon rise.

7. Pacific Beach Cruising

P.B. is a great place to rent a beach cruiser bike and go for a scenic beach ride. The beach is largely populated by affluent young professionals, college students, and surfers. A lot of fun can be had on a Sunday bike ride from bar to bar during football season.

6. Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter is a 17 block historical neighborhood in the middle of San Diego's downtown. Many events take place here such as the Street Scene Music Festival, a St. Patrick's Day parade, and Mardi Gras. Near Gaslamp, the San Diego Padres play at PETCO Park. Gaslamp is the central hub of nightlife in the city.

5. Little Italy

Little Italy was once an Italian fishing neighborhood reliant on tuna, but nowadays the area has been gentrified into a destination for fine arts, quaint residential housing, and delectable dining. Little Italy is an active district with regular festivals and events each month. Every Saturday on Date Street, Little Italy has a famous farmer's market selling fresh fish and produce.

4. San Diego Zoo

The Zoological Society of San Diego operates this 100 acre zoo with over 3,500 animals. Popular exhibits include Panda Trek, Polar Bear Plunge, Elephant Odyssey, Gorilla Tropics, and Sun Bear Forest. The zoo offers a chance to view several endangered species such as the California Condor and African Black Rhinos.

3. SeaWorld

Watching Shamu do a back flip never gets old! The original SeaWorld was opened in San Diego on March 21, 1964 by four UCLA graduates. One Ocean is the most popular show which features killer whales and their trainers.

The Catamaran Hotel on Mission Boulevard rents small skiffs to sail around Mission Bay. If sailing sounds too difficult, there are a variety of other water sports to participate in such as paddle boarding, wind surfing, water skiing, or kayaking.

1. Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala

Founded in 1769, this historical building provides a lens to examine San Diego's colorful Spanish history. The mission was the first in the Las Californias Province of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The architecture is an excellent example of the style associated with the Mission Period (1769-1833) in San Diego.
