How do I know if my Atlas (C1) is out of alignment?

Initially, this is determined through a neuro-structural screening we can provide at our consultations. It doesn’t take long to identify if you know what to look for. Most people have had a trauma to their neck that created an Atlas misalignment simply at birth or during childhood and oftentimes later as well from car accidents, falls, head injuries, etc. Serious accidents leave people with problems that never seem to heal. Smaller injuries or childhood injuries often just slowly worsen over the years and decades until someone has degenerated from being twisted and off balance for so long. These cases are both more common and less likely to be found until later in life after pain has set in years after degeneration has progressed. We find it much better to be proactive and get it fixed from the beginning instead of just seeking relief for years and then trying to fix the root problem after it has severely degenerated and you can’t find relief anymore any other way.

How is an Atlas (C1) adjustment supposed to help with low back pain or anywhere else in the body other than the head and neck?

This is a complex question we often hear that requires a change in perspective more than anything. Our approach looks at the body as a whole unit and we address it as such, whereas conventional chiropractic adjustments just look to apply high force to an area of pain to provide temporary relief. Everything is connected and the communication between the brain and body is affected the greatest at the top of the neck as the brainstem exits the skull. If this is perfectly balanced, then the rest of the body underneath it will also balance and relax. We explain this in more detail on our website or in a consultation.

Do your adjustments include cracking or popping the spine?

Our office doesn’t do any twisting, cracking, or popping of your spine like a conventional chiropractor. Our adjustments work with your nervous system to restore balance and help your brain communicate efficiently and effectively with the rest of your body.

Do you specialize in upper cervical, or Atlas (C1), adjustments?

We are an upper cervical chiropractic office using the NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) approach to adjusting the Atlas (C1) vertebrae.

Do I have to keep coming back often to feel good, like a conventional chiropractor?

When it comes to your follow-up visits, our upper cervical approach requires much less maintenance than conventional chiropractors. As long as someone is holding their correction made from the first day then we do not need to keep adjusting. The longer you hold your correction the less likely you will lose the correction and need to be readjusted because your body has been healing in a balanced, relaxed state. Imagine how it will feel for problems to start improving as you heal, instead of continually getting worse month after month, and year after year.

I already get my Atlas adjusted by my regular chiropractor, what makes you any different?

NUCCA adjustments are incredibly precise in both the analysis by measuring the relationship of the head, Atlas, and neck down to a quarter of a degree. We do not just guess how to adjust based on the feeling of restriction. Combined with the precise analysis is the specific adjustment, not a high force thrust followed by a pop. The adjustment angle is carefully measured and controlled with a gentle pressure of a longer period of time without any thrust. Together, the analysis and adjustment can rebalance the body to hold its alignment better in both quality and length of time.
